How An Emergency Gas Scrubber Mitigates the Dangers of Storing Chlorine

A chlorine gas leak that killed 12 and injured 251 more in Jordan made recent headlines. The deadly leak occurred at Jordan’s Aqaba port, when a tank filled with 25 tons of chlorine gas fell while in the process of being transported to Djibouti. Authorities were forced to call on area residents to shut windows and stay indoors to prevent further injury to the surrounding communities.

Such disasters remind us of the dangers of storing chlorine and the importance of having chlorine hazard mitigation measures in place, like PureAir’s Emergency Gas Scrubber, a turn-key solution that prevents toxic gas leaks.

Chlorine Leak Case Study: North Texas Municipal Water District

A very large North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) has three Sentry™ Emergency Gas Dry Scrubbers (EGS-300) on site in case of a chlorine leak. One night, one of the scrubbers had a significant chlorine leak. By the time the facility’s main chlorine alarm system alerted staff to the leak, PureAir’s EGS-300 had already kicked into gear, pulling the toxic gas from the air and through the scrubber where Safetysorb absorbent media neutralized it, releasing only purified, clean air into the building.

According to the Instrumentation Technician working that night, the EGS-300 worked very well, detecting the chlorine leak and dealing with it well before the main alarm system detected the leak.
